​Tuatapere
  is located on on the eastern edge of  Fiordland's spectacular forests and unspoilt scenery. The town is within reach of world-class jet boating and hiking. Stay for a night before venturing into Waitutu Lodge.


Going in by Jet Boat

​Guests of Waitutu Incorporation intending to visit the Lodge by Jet Boat, starts with an easy drive to Lake Hauroko from Tuatapere. Head towards Clifden (12 km, 10 min), then turn west along the Lillburn Valley Road to Lake Hauroko (about 36 km to the carpark, 20 km of which is unsealed road).

Essentials to take into the Lodge:

  • ​Sandfly repellent - (plenty of it)
  • Wet weather gear
  • Good walking boots/shoes
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Warm clothes
  • Sunglasses
  • Plenty of food/drinks
  • Mobile phone
  • ​Torch
  • Gaiters

Linen (sheets/duvet/towel) can be hired

Going in by helicopter

Fiordland Helicopters  will give you a very quick helicopter flight can take you right to the front door of the Lodge.  It leaves from Orawia hangar which is approximately 14km outside Tuatapere, off of the Ohai-Clifden Highway. 

​Hiking in along the South Coast Track

​The
 south coast track starts at Rarakau - 21.5 km from Tuatapere.  Cars can be left at the 
Rarakau Car Park, 1304B Papatotara Coast Road Papatotara, 9691.

The walk to Waitutu Forest Lodge takes two days. First night at Port Craig then continue on the next day to the Lodge.
